The WiReQu II project is being carried out by the Chair of Urban Planning at RPTU Kaiserslautern in cooperation with HCU Hamburg and a Ukrainian NGO. It is part of the "Strengthen Urban Resilience in Ukraine" (SUR) program initiated by the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), which has been supporting the reconstruction of war-torn cities in Ukraine since autumn 2023.
The reconstruction of Ukraine requires innovative, sustainable and resilient strategies to make cities and communities fit for the future. Building on the knowledge already gained from the WiReQu I project, this project aims to facilitate a structured transfer of knowledge in the field of resilient reconstruction strategies. Through the combination of scientific expertise, practice-oriented methods and digital knowledge transfer, effective support for cities in Ukraine is to be created.
In order to effectively shape the transfer of knowledge on resilient reconstruction strategies in Ukraine, the project focuses on three central measures. Firstly, the findings from WiReQu I will be further developed and made available. This includes the systematization of existing research results, the identification of proven methods and transferable solutions for the Ukrainian context as well as the adaptation of these findings to current challenges and regional conditions.
Another focus is on the development of a digital learning platform that acts as a central knowledge base. This will provide tools, guidelines and case studies for municipalities, planners and decision-makers and enable an interdisciplinary exchange for practical application of the content.
Another component involves advising pilot cities on the practical implementation of resilient reconstruction strategies. To this end, pilot cities in Ukraine will be specifically selected and supported to serve as model projects for resilient neighborhood development. In addition to the development of specific recommendations for action and concepts, the municipalities receive support through expert workshops, consultations and networking with relevant stakeholders.
The combination of these measures enables a comprehensive transfer of knowledge, which provides both theoretical foundations and concrete application strategies for the reconstruction of Ukrainian cities.
