The built heritage is an important foundation for a resilient city. The existing urban structure not only embodies embodied energy; it is also a carrier of identity, design quality, and social cohesion. Especially when it comes to climate resilience, conflicts frequently arise between historic preservation, design guidelines, and the requirements for adapting existing buildings to contemporary needs. This is further compounded by other aspects of resilience such as safety, protection, and robustness.

The goal should be to understand built culture as part of urban resilience and to foster interdisciplinary cooperation among historic preservation, urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, and other disciplines.

Vanessa Ziegler will provide an introduction to the significance of architectural heritage for resilient urban development. Liubov Apostolova-Sossa will present examples of resilient architectural culture from Ukraine. Following this, we will discuss with additional guests how built culture can be holistically conceived and practically implemented as a factor that fosters resilience.

The colloquium will take place in a hybrid format —in person at RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau, Pfaffenbergstraße 95, Building 1, Room 01-160, 67663 Kaiserslautern, as well as digitally via Zoom.

The event is recognized as continuing education by the Rhineland-Palatinate Chamber of Architects. To receive a certificate of participation, please send an email with your personal information, including your membership number, to: stadtplanung@ru.rptu.de
