Teaching Bachelor Spatial Planning
Models of urban development history and urban planning | 1st semester
Prof. Dr. Detlef Kurth | Wednesday, 10:00-11:30 | 01_U19
The lecture deals with the main features of the history of urban development and urban planning, including the development of planning models, urban expansion and urban renewal plans since the 19th century, methods of analysis and urban perception, a layered analysis of urban typologies and urban subspaces as well as quality criteria for the design and use of public spaces.
Basic features of the history of urban development and urban planning
Development lines of planning models (19th and 20th century)
Urban expansion and urban renewal planning since the 19th century
Fundamentals of urban planning and design | 2nd semester
No courses in the winter semester.
Students are given an introductory overview of the basic planning and design methods of overall local planning in settlement areas. In exercises, they develop a systematic understanding of the classification of settlement structures in their historical and conceptual-historical context and basic application skills in the methods of overall local planning.
Principles, systematics and methodology in planning and design
Integrated SWOT analysis
Development of guiding principles
Design techniques, utilization and structural concepts
Urban planning design
Urban design | 3rd semester
Prof. Dr. Detlef Kurth, Dipl.-Ing. Marie-Katrin Turgetto, Dr. Martina Stepper, Prof. h.c. Dr. Karl Ziegler | Thursday, 08:00-13:15 | 01-090/01-U62
In the project-based module Design, students acquire a basic qualification in dealing with the use of space in a planning area. Furthermore, they are enabled to use the methods of urban analysis and the basic planning and design methods of urban and local planning as well as the visualization and communication of planning content in a manner appropriate to the task. In this year's urban design project, the "Dr. Jacob Gelände" in Bad Kreuznach, an urban quarter between the city centre and industry, is being worked on.
Inventory and analysis (city as a whole, neighborhood/nearby area and planning area)
Development of guiding principles and formulation of objectives
Utilization concept
Structural concept
Integrated urban planning design (incl. open space planning and traffic planning aspects)

Project Concepts | 4th semester (compulsory elective module)
No courses in the winter semester.
Students are able to analyze a given urban planning situation. They can draw on existing knowledge from the fields of working methods, urban planning, open space planning, sociology, traffic planning and architecture and apply the theories and models they have learned there. They can derive planning objectives and design conceptual plans and strategies and present and visualize these in plans and texts as well as justify and defend them in front of project partners. The project-based module is worked on in small groups so that students learn to structure the project work independently and develop creative solutions in a team. Students can choose to work on a project example of urban renewal or urban development.
Thematic focus on existing urban structures and their further development
Integrated analysis and survey of the existing situation
Conception and implementation of participatory formats for direct exchange with local stakeholders
Derivation of planning objectives at various scales
Integration of specialist planning aspects into the design concepts
Development of urban development concepts, urban renewal concepts and urban planning designs as well as implementation strategies
Urban land-use planning | 4th semester
No courses in the winter semester.
Students are familiar with the possibilities and limits of influencing urban structures using urban land-use planning instruments and procedures and are able to conceptually develop basic representations and specifications for urban land-use plans and implement them in drawings and texts.
Land use plan and development plan in the context of space and environment
Needs assessment, land potential analysis and presentation techniques for the land use plan
Content and concept of the core provisions of the development plan
Practice of urban land use planning | Elective module
Felix Jacob M.Sc. | Thursday, 11:45-13:14 | 01-U34
In this module, a regulatory concept and a development plan draft are developed from an urban development framework plan, the plan justification including environmental report is designed and the development plan procedure is simulated in a simulation game with the steps from the selection of the procedure to the entry into force.
Development of a regulatory concept and a draft development plan from an urban development framework plan
Basic concept of the plan justification including environmental report
Simulation of the development plan procedure (selection of the procedure variant, participation, decision-making, entry into force)
Special topics in urban planning | recommended 5th semester
Currently no courses.
In the compulsory elective module, the knowledge acquired in the basic modules of urban planning is deepened in special, case-related, differentiated topics using current case studies. In particular, the following process-related aspects of urban planning are dealt with in extracts and worked out using examples:
Fundamentals of control through and of planning
Informal instruments for the development of settlement areas and urban development
Introduction to building land strategies / building land models
Project development in existing development and conversion
Planning as a communication task
Competition and award procedures
Urban planning and open space design | Elective module
Prof. h.c. Dr. Karl Ziegler in cooperation with the Chair of Open Space Planning | Monday, 11:45-13:15 | 01-U62
Students will be able to apply the skills they have already acquired with regard to planning and design methods for overall local planning in settlement areas with integrated open space planning to a practical example, apply various urban and open space-related design principles and discuss them in a comparative manner Urban and open space design integrated planning
open space design
Urban design
Study project | 6th semester
No courses in the winter semester.
The project work promotes methodological competence, self-motivated work and deepens key skills such as communication and cooperation skills, presentation, project management and moderation. The Bachelor's project involves working on practical issues in spatial planning. The scientific and writing skills developed in the project also serve as preparation for the Bachelor's thesis
Study project according to individual topic
Bachelor thesis | 6th semester
Individual deadlines.
The Bachelor's thesis should show that the student is able to work independently on a task using the usual methods of the subject within a specified period and present it in writing, planning or design. The student should be able to respond meaningfully to critical questions about the written work.
