With their centrality, their supply function, as meeting points and places of exchange, as well as their city-defining image, city centers and district centers are of outstanding importance for the city as a whole. Due to structural changes and a variety of challenges, they are under constant pressure to develop and renew. The coronavirus pandemic is currently presenting the centers with major challenges that are having a variety of effects.
The ExWoSt project is investigating whether and in which areas of center development at municipal level there is an increased need for action, modification and control in view of the pandemic. The focus is also on the question of whether and what need for correction or updating results from the pandemic crisis for integrated urban development concepts for city centers and urban and district centers.
Eight good examples of integrated urban development concepts for the cooperative, urban, multifunctional and resilient development of inner cities, town and district centers in times of pandemic crisis are to be prepared for the transfer of knowledge into municipal practice and practice-oriented recommendations for action and recommendations for the federal urban development instruments are to be derived.
