The Department of Urban Planning addresses the diverse challenges of urban development through its teaching and research. The focus is on urban design, urban planning, and formal and informal tools and methods of urban planning. Led by Prof. Dr. Detlef Kurth, the team brings together the areas of study of regional planning and architecture and takes an interdisciplinary approach to current issues in sustainable urban development.
The curriculum covers the fundamentals, advanced knowledge, and methods and techniques of urban development. The curriculum for the Bachelor’s program in Spatial Planning and the Master’s program in Urban Planning and Urban and Regional Developmentincludes courses on urban design, urban development planning, land-use planning, and theories and models of urban development. There is a particular emphasis on hands-on project work, in which current challenges in urban development are addressed and tackled collaboratively.
Urban Planning Colloquium
The Urban Planning Colloquium organized by the Chair of Urban Planning provides a platform for exchange between academia, the planning profession, and the public. Renowned speakers from research, government, and the professional field address current challenges in urban development and discuss innovative approaches to designing livable cities. The event series promotes interdisciplinary dialogue and invites students, experts, and anyone interested to engage in a shared exchange of ideas.
