In teaching and research, the Chair of Urban Planning deals with a broad spectrum of topics relating to urban development, urban planning, urban design and formal and informal urban planning instruments and procedures. Accordingly, the team headed by Prof. Dr. Detlef Kurth is made up of interdisciplinary spatial planners and architects.

In teaching, the basics, in-depth knowledge, methods and techniques for sustainable urban development are taught. The courses offered by the Chair of Urban Planning include courses on urban design, urban development planning, urban land-use planning and theories and models of urban development in the Bachelor's degree course in Spatial Planning and the Master's degree course in Urban and Regional Development. The focus is also on practical project work on current topics.
