Prof. Albert Speer Symposium

In 1972, the degree program "Spatial and Environmental Planning" was founded at the TU Kaiserslautern by Prof. Speer and Prof. Stich, among others - two years after the university was founded. This makes it the third oldest independent planning degree program in Germany after Dortmund and Weimar. The founding concept had an integrated approach in which architects, spatial planners and later civil engineers were taught together in the first semesters. This teaching concept was also reflected in the urban planning concepts: they were created jointly with traffic planners, landscape planners and architects, among others.

Prof. Albert Speer was thus one of the "founding fathers" of spatial planning education in Germany, having strongly influenced it for 25 years from 1972-1997 with lectures based on a large slide archive and integrated urban planning designs. The symposia and student workshops are intended to pay tribute to Albert Speer's work in teaching on the one hand and to highlight future prospects for urban planning in Germany and Europe on the other.

The following topics, among others, will be explored:

  • Motives for the founding of the undergraduate degree program in Spatial and
    Environmental Planning
  • The impact of spatial planning from Kaiserslautern on innovative planning procedures
  • Examples of the productive linking of teaching and practice
  • Challenges and future prospects for future
    planning education
  • The role of urban development and urban planning in spatial planning

To kick off the series of events, the Prof. Albert Speer Foundation, in cooperation with the Chair of Urban Planning, invited participants to Kaiserslautern in October 2019. These joint meetings of experts from research and practice in urban and spatial planning have established themselves as symposia and take place annually on current planning topics.

In 2022, the Chair of Urban Planning once again worked closely with the Prof. Albert Speer Foundation. The joint efforts to promote young planners in German-speaking countries found particular expression in the "Award of the Professor Albert Speer Foundation", which was presented for the first time in 2022. Under the title "Future City and Landscape - Strategies and Projects on Urban Resilience and Climate Change", the competition was held for outstanding Bachelor's and Master's theses at German-speaking universities from the last two years that dealt with future issues of the city and landscape in a special way. The focus of the work submitted was on challenges arising from crises such as climate change and the pandemic. A total of seven works were honored and recognized with prize money of 1,500 euros each. The results of the Professor Albert Speer Foundation Award will be published in a brochure that can be downloaded from the foundation's website.

The first Professor Albert Speer Foundation Awards were presented at this year's 4th Professor Albert Speer Symposium. This took place at the invitation of Dr. Reimar Molitor, Managing Director of Region Köln/Bonn e.V., from September 30 to October 1, 2022 in Cologne. In addition to technical discussions on the challenges and future issues of planning, previously developed theses by the award winners were discussed. There were also joint excursions to the Rheinboulevard, Deutz harbor and the Hambach open-cast mine.

Anthology "Planning for tomorrow - future city and space" published

In cooperation with the Professor Albert Speer Foundation, Friedbert Greif, Detlef Kurth and Bernd Scholl have brought together renowned experts from the fields of urban policy, urban administration, planning practice and planning science to summarize the results of the symposia in an anthology entitled "Planung für Morgen - Zukunft Stadt und Raum" (Planning for Tomorrow - The Future of City and Space) based on the annual Professor Albert Speer Symposia. The book was published by JOVIS-Verlag in December 2022 and can be ordered from the publisher's website.
