Excursion Vienna 2018 - High-density housing from the time of Red Vienna to the present day

The excursion to Vienna took place from March 20 to 24, 2018 under the title "High-density housing from the time of Red Vienna to the present day". The focus was on Vienna's unique housing policy. The aim was to illustrate the historical continuity and quality of Viennese housing construction. Discussions with stakeholders, guided tours and a visit to the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning provided an in-depth insight into the topic.

 

Excursion program

Tuesday


The first day of the excursion provided an introduction to the topic. In the morning, there was a guided tour of the Architekturzentrum Wien followed by the opportunity to explore the Museumsquartier itself.In the afternoon, the transforming areas of the Nordbahnhof and the Sonnenwendviertel were visited, also with regard to Vienna as an IBA city, under the guiding principle of "Socially sustainable housing in the 21st century".The day ended with a lecture by Prof. Dr. Rudolf Scheuvens at the Vienna University of Technology.

 

Wednesday


In the rest of the program, the Werkbund Estate as well as Tamariskengasse and Pilotengasse gave an insight into the architecturally valuable housing estates of the 1920s and 1980s. On the way to Transdanubia, the Gasometer City could be visited and explored during the lunch break. The open evening program gave students the opportunity to get to know the new WU campus at Welthandelsplatz and then explore the city itself.

 

Thursday


The penultimate day of the excursion started in the morning at the Sargfabrik, an alternative housing project named after the history of the site. During the course of the day, the excursion group visited the Karl-Marx-Hof from the time of Red Vienna and Europe's currently largest urban development area, Seestadt Aspern. These contrasting examples illustrated the continuous history of subsidized housing construction in Vienna.The day ended with a convivial meal together in the restaurant.

 

Friday


The excursion ended on Friday with a guided tour of the Alt-Erlaa residential park, with a view from the roof terrace of the 27th floor over the rooftops of Vienna. At lunchtime, the group visited the Monte Laa urban development area.There, the excursion ended with a joint Topfenstrudel.
