As part of the research college “Resilient Transformation Spaces (ReTra)”, the Rhineland-Palatinate University of Technology Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU) and Koblenz University of Applied Sciences (HS KO) are jointly developing innovative strategies for sustainable and crisis-proof spatial development in rural low mountain regions.
The flood disaster in the Ahr valley in 2021 showed that even rural regions are increasingly threatened by destructive natural events. In addition to structural deficiencies, undesirable developments in the settlement structure and landscape development also became apparent.
Over a period of three years, the research college will bring together interdisciplinary (supra-) local strategies for the development of resilient transformation areas and provide generalizable findings and innovative strategies for sustainable and crisis-proof spatial development in rural low mountain regions. The current discourse and previous research and strategy development, which primarily deals with urban structures, will also be supplemented by the project for rural areas. ReTra also offers the opportunity to train urgently needed young scientists in science and planning practice.
The research college is working on six doctoral projects:
Changing trends in planning cultures with a view to governance in transition areas
Municipal and inter-municipal settlement development
Requirements for resilient settlement development
Designing participatory processes in water-sensitive spatial development
Transformation of settlement areas in low mountain ranges to climate-resilient water management
Resilient sports clubs - adapting club sports facilities to climate change and extreme events
