The joint project "Linking Borderlands: Dynamics of border regional peripheries" focuses on European border regions as contact zones and transition areas at periphery of nation states. The project analyses these so-called borderlands to illuminate persistent development paths as well as radical changes. For this purpose, the network uses Border Studies, as part of Regional Studies, as a common approach. The network consists of Saarland University (UdS, lead partner), the University of Kaiserslautern (TUK), the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) (EUV) and the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU). Jointly, the project approaches the border areas of the Greater Region SaarLorLux+ and Brandenburg / Lebus to investigate cross-border regions that are - from a nation-state perspective - peripherally located. The two regions differ both in terms of their degree of interdependence and their participation in the process of EU integration.

Within the framework of the joint project, five focal points will be addressed: Policy transfer and learning, social practice and language in vocational training contexts, cultural negotiation processes in film, planning cultures and energy transitions. The common goal is to be able to advise decision-makers in politics and society in the two cross-border regions and beyond on the problems and opportunities of cross-border cooperation.

The department of International Planning Systems is working together with the department of Regional Development and Spatial Planning on the subproject "Planning Borderlands". Cross-border cooperation in spatial planning and development is confronted with challenges caused by different planning systems, languages, and values. These challenges will be systematically analysed by employing the planning cultures approach. For this purpose, the subproject will compare the provision of public services based on the European object to guarantee access to infrastructures and services. This forms the subject for the analysis of how planning cultures in the regions are constituted and to what extent there is a planning culture that is specific to the cross-border context.
